(NEW ORLEANS, LA) — Mr. and Miss Ƶ (Ƶ) proudly represented
the institution at the 23rd Annual HBCU Kings & Queens Leadership Conference at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans. This prestigious four-day gathering united HBCU
student leaders from across the country for a series of workshops, networking events,
and cultural celebrations designed to strengthen their skills as ambassadors for their
institutions.
The conference, recognized as the nation’s premier training ground for HBCU student royalty, immersed participants in a robust schedule of activities focused on leadership, professional development, and cultural enrichment. Highlights for Coahoma’s Mr. and Miss Ƶ included:
- “Polished and Powerful”– a leadership and style intensive that focused on personal presentation and professional presence.
- “Lead with Your V.O.I.C.E.”– a dynamic workshop designed to strengthen public speaking and communication skills.
- “Planning the Perfect Coronation”– a session offering insight into coordinating and elevating signature campus events.
- Fine Dining Etiquette Dinner– a formal training experience to refine dining and networking etiquette.
- Advisor-Led Panels and Networking Opportunities– connecting students with experienced mentors and peers from across the HBCU network.
- Royal Game Show– an interactive event focused on teamwork and camaraderie among campus leaders.
- Royal Academy Awards Masquerade Ball at Xavier University of Louisiana– the conference’s signature celebration honoring leadership and excellence.
During the week, Mr. and Miss Ƶ were also recognized for their confidence and professionalism, earning the “Most Impressive Onsite Introduction” award, a distinction that highlighted their poise and preparation among peers from dozens of HBCUs.
Karen Woods-Done, Director of Student Engagement, emphasized the importance of the experience. “We are proud of Mr. and Miss Ƶ for representing Coahoma at this conference. Their participation reflects our commitment to developing student leaders who inspire and serve,” said Done. “The skills they gained will positively impact our campus community.”
Nicole Ross, Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Royal Court Advisor, shared similar praise, noting how the experience has prepared the students for their roles on campus. “Watching our students engage with their peers and professionals from other HBCUs was truly inspiring,” Ross said.
Zariah Hamidou, Miss Ƶ, reflected on her personal growth during the event, stating,
“Attending the HBCU Kings & Queens Leadership Conference was truly empowering. Each
session gave me valuable tools for my role as Miss Ƶ. From strengthening my public
speaking to learning how to carry myself with grace and professionalism, I now feel
more prepared to serve and uplift our campus community.”
Ja’Mikal Reed, Mr. Ƶ, shared how the week helped him refine his leadership skills and expand his network. “This conference was eye-opening,” he said. “The workshops not only challenged me to grow as a leader but also connected me with a network of HBCU student leaders who share a passion for service and legacy. I’m excited to bring these lessons back to Coahoma to motivate and inspire others.”
The HBCU Kings & Queens Leadership Conference, hosted by Leadership for Queens and The Kings’ Konnection, has become a cornerstone event for newly elected student royalty, helping them develop the skills, confidence, and connections to succeed as campus leaders. Held in the vibrant French Quarter, the Royal Sonesta New Orleans provided a fitting backdrop for a week devoted to growth, leadership, and celebration.
